Red Ribbons

from Golden Greats Vol. 12 by John Ralston

about

This is a newer track - written in 2015. It started out as a country ballad - believe it or not. Then, Steve Copeletti came by and I followed his lead. I remember that day vividly because we were all laughing so hard between takes because it is so damn fast. Chris Conner was there too with the assist on this one. Just a fun day in the studio. And that snare work....

It sat most of the year until I finally got the vibe on the vocals.

The middle section needed a ripper on guitar. So my man Chris Carrabba just shredded it with what I can only assume is his Nash Tele. Perfect. Just what the song needed. "10". I smile like an idiot every time i hear it.

Then a few weeks ago Dan Bonebrake came by and played one of the finest bass tracks I have ever heard. In no time flat. Think it was 2 takes.

This track is a super fun way for me to end the year. Hope you like it too.

lyrics

You live like a flood that covers the land
You're living on blood, and other demands
I'm just trying to breathe - to come up for air
But you're like a flood, and I'm burning in here

How can I meet those demands?
I decided that someone else can - and I made a fire

Saw you in your tower, miles up in the air
Your wave crashed down to me - you beckoned me there
I climbed up for years, only to find out, when I knocked on your door that I'd been locked out

How can I meet those demands?
I decided that someone else can - and I made a fire

Saw your red ribbons on the ground, and that's when I knew that I could not be your clown.
So I made a fire.
